Obituary

Stanley Edward Sweitzer, 90, of Laureldale, passed away June 26, 2021 at the Reading Hospital. He was the husband of Joyce Arlene Sweitzer, with whom he shared almost 63 years of marriage. Born October 2, 1930 in Reading, he was the son of the late Roy Harold and Margaret (Cairns) Sweitzer.

Stanley served in the United States Navy at New London, Connecticut. He later apprenticed at Textile Machine Works as a draftsman, and attended Wyomissing Polytech and Reading High Night School. He was employed as a draftsman and wiring designer at Western Electric and AT&T for 32 years, retiring in 1993.

Stanley was an involved parent, and a devoted caregiver to his wife during her years-long battle with dementia. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, and enjoyed volunteering in his children's activities, the church, Meals on Wheels, and Diakon's VIP (rides for seniors) program. He also enjoyed travel and attending sporting events. He didn't miss many Penn State home football games for over thirty years.

Surviving are his two sons: John, husband of Robin Sweitzer of Muhlenberg Township, and Edward Sweitzer of Laurel, Maryland. In addition are his two grandchildren: Jessica Sweitzer of Muhlenberg Township, and Bradley, husband of Ashley Rhodes of Temple, and his two great grandchildren: Allison and Hailey Rhodes. He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce, and his brother, Clifford M. "Jack" Sweitzer.

The family would like to thank the staff at St Joseph's Heart Center for making his long retirement possible, the staff at the McGlinn Cancer Institute for the comfort and care he received during his final illness, and his many neighbors who offered or provided help.
