Lloyd Wilmot Hopkins, Jr. Lloyd Wilmot “ Hoppy” Hopkins, Jr., 93, of Oley, died April 27, 2021. Born March 17, 1928, in Bridgeport, CT, he was the son of the late Lloyd Wilmot Hopkins, Sr. and Leila H. (Finch) Hopkins. The family moved to Wyomissing, PA in June 1940. Lloyd was a 1945 graduate of Wyomissing High School. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute, served his country in the Army and graduated from Penn State University in 1951, in Commerce and Finance, majoring in insurance. While at Penn State he was a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Hoppy is the widower of the love of his life Phoebe Lorah (Bertolet) Hopkins, who died May 12, 2018. They married September 1, 1956. The Hopkins enjoyed country life at Bertolet Grist Mill Farm in Oley where they raised cheviot sheep, border collies and children. Hoppy pursued his insurance career with Purcell-Curry Agency, General Agents for Aetna Life Insurance Company. After 35 years with Aetna, he became associated with the Eugene R. Curry, Jr. Agency as an independent producer, retiring in 1995. Hoppy received his Chartered Life Underwriters Designation. Hoppy was social with a wry sense of humor and quick wit. He joined and provided leadership to many local civic and community organizations: Member and Committee Chairman of Reading Junior Chamber of Commerce, President of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity Alumni Association 1955-56, President of Oley Lions Club 1964-65, President of Reading Association of Life Underwriters 1964-65, President of Berks County Association of Chartered Life Underwriters 1966-67, Chartered Member of Berks County Estate Council, Member and Manager for the Oley Valley Little League Baseball 1970-72, Oley Valley Planning Commission 1968-2012 (Chairman 2002-2003), Member of Reading Area Transportation Study 2003, Co-Chairman of the Pleasantville Covered Bridge Restoration Committee 2002-04, Board Member Oley Valley Education Foundation 2000-2005, Member of Oley Valley Business Association, and Charter Member of Berks Agriculture Resource Network. He especially followed Penn State and The Giants, both football and baseball. Willie Mays was his favorite player. He coached his son’s Little League Tigers. Fishing trips took him to seek bass in the Rideau Lakes in Canada, fly fish for trout in Montana, Alberta, Canada, and the Tulpehocken Creek, sports fish in the keys, surf fish at Barnegat Light, NJ and sunfish in his Oley pond. The spirit of adventure called to him at age 15, when he and buddy Don Walter hitchhiked across the country to visit distant cousins.
